Richard Hickman, PhD

Richard Hickman is an artist and teacher; he has held eight solo exhibitions and taught for 13 years in secondary schools prior to taking up university-based teacher education. He is currently Professor of Aesthetic Development at University of Cambridge, where he is course leader for initial teacher education in art and design and Dean of Homerton College. Richard’s major publications include The Art & Craft of Pedagogy (Bloomsbury, 2013); Why We Make Art and Why it is Taught (Intellect, 2005/2010); Research in Art Education (Intellect, 2008), Art Education 11-18, (Continuum, 2004) and Critical Studies in Art & Design Education (Intellect, 2005). He has received the Pilkington Teaching Prize for teaching excellence from Cambridge University and the Herbert Read Award for lifetime achievement from the International Society for Education through Art.
